The City of Kentwood Police Department is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of
sponsored police recruit
.   This position is for those who aspire to become full-time police officers for the City of Kentwood, but have not yet attended a police academy.  The Kentwood Police Department will provide a full paid sponsorship to an MCOLES approved police academy.  Upon successful completion of the police academy, MCOLES certification and in-house training at the Kentwood Police Department, the recruit will be sworn in as a Certified Police Officer.   We are looking for ambitious men and women with character, high moral integrity and a strong work ethic.  No prior law enforcement experience is necessary to apply for this position.  To learn more about our department, please view our yearly reports found here

SALARY: 
  • Starting recruit pay (during the course of the police academy) is $24.64 per hour.
    • Upon successful completion of the police academy, starting officer pay as of July 1 2023 is $31.99 per hour ($66,535 annually).
    • Top officer pay (after four years of employment) as of July 1 2023  is $40.83 per hour ($84,920 annually).

minimum requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age;
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED;
  • Be a United States citizen at the time of testing;
  • Must not have any felony convictions and certain misdemeanor convictions;
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver's license prior to hire date;
  • Must be able to attend and complete and MCOLES approve police academy.

      • 401K with 22% total contribution (12% employer, 10% employee)

    • Paid Parental Leave:
      • Four (4) weeks paid leave following birth or adoption
      • Additional two weeks for employees giving birth
    • Continuing education and training
essential functions: 
  • Attends all formal training classes in preparation for re-classification to full-time Law Enforcement Officer
  • Attends an orientation period at the Kentwood Police Department
  • Completes training assignments (resulting from the orientation period)
  • Learns Kentwood Police Department policies and procedures
